Thus, if I see something I missed, I can stop without hitting anything. In Europe, it is typical to see very few stop signs (especially in the flatlands of Holland), since it is assumed that people riding bicycles, THINK while riding. Crossing streets in Europe is the equivalent of major jaywalking here... the reason is that the European driving ethic is to avoid traffic/pedestrians/bikes, not panic stop & jump out of the car and sue the hell out of what was in the way.
