1.  If I remember correctly... you need to set emacs for one less column
than is on the screen to keep the cursor from scrolling up the screen when a
character is typed on the last column of the last line.

2.  Always start up in text-mode..
(auto-execute "text-mode" "*\0")
Stifle those screams.
