I speculated on the following a few weeks ago; I got to try it last
night and it worked:

In this situation I stepped down into the room.  The Centaur moved
to the doorway.  The Orc disappeared; I knew it was on top of me,
moving toward the gold without fighting.  I hit the Centaur;
since I was on the same point as the Orc, it did not attempt to hit
back!

If this were a party room too crowded for the Orc to move again,
I might have been able to hit many times while hiding under the Orc.
