It's easy to cut a square loaf into  8 square pieces:

  1. Cut in half each (obvious) direction, to
     make four squares.

  2. Stand eqch square on edge and cut in half the OTHER
     way, making eight thin squares.

Remember, we were only asked to make squares, not cubes.
