Is anyone familiar with Mailnet & Educom?

My understanding is that this is a group of 475 colleges
and universities that transfer mail back and forth.

Does anyone care to volunteer information about this network,
are they using BITNET protocols, dialups, leased lines.

Are there any gateways between the usenet/arpanet/csnet & Mailnet?
