I remember watching Batman every week (even twice for a while). Whenever they had occasion to mention the civilian identities of Batman and Robin, it was always: Millionaire Bruce Wayne, and His Youthful Ward, Dick Grayson. I seem to recall stumbling across the origin story somewhere once (maybe \\Fantastic Origins of Comic Superheroes// or some similar title. I'm pretty sure they were circus aerialists, and I believe they got it while attempting to stop a gang from making off with the circus' receipts from a performance.
