One contender was the incumbent Bill Clements, a cantankerous old reactionary who had outspent the Democrats by a huge margin to become the first Republican governor in the state since Reconstruction. His opponent was Mark White, who had passed the years of Gov. Bill's reign as Attorney General, making him the state's top Democratic elected official. The very day before the election, the polls gave the Republican an eight- point lead. The Democrat won. --- Prentiss Riddle ("Aprendiz de todo, maestro de nada.") --- {ihnp4,harvard,seismo,gatech,ctvax}!ut-sally!riddle
