Statistics Lines: 17 Xref: princeton net.politics:1468 net.motss:472 Helms has promised not to take the job. He was vulnerable in North Carolina only because Hunt was almost able to make the charge that he served the national New Right rather than his state stick; had not Helms consistently emphasized the importance of the Agriculture committee (and his committment to it), it is likely he would have been defeated. I don't think Helms will dare switch committees so soon after his scare. Next in line is Lugar of Indiana. Not as loud as Helms, though the New Right could live with him. However, he is seeking the post of Majority Leader, and should he succeed, the man next in line is... Mathias of Maryland! The next best thing to Weicker in the Senate! Gosh, I hope Lugar gets Baker's job. David Rubin {allegra|astrovax|princeton}!fisher!david
