The answers I received were informative. I would like to thank everyone that took the time to answer the survey. The results are first presented in the order as received and then grouped by the question. Without further verbosity here are the original questions and the results. Mike Lesher Burroughs ASG, San Diego, CA. (..!bmcg!mikel) Sleep Questionnaire 1. When sleeping singlely, what is your normal position? Include position of trunk, legs and arms. Are there any special requirements for sleep (tv, radio, holding pillow, stuffed something?) Is the bed covering required in a special position? 2. What is the normal amount of time required from the time you try to get to sleep until you are asleep? 3. How easy do you get up in the morning? Do you use an alarm? 4. When sleeping with a partner, what are the normal positions? Are partners facing together, away, same direction? Include position of trunk, legs, arms and hands. Are there any special requirements for sleep (tv, radio, holding pillow, stuffed something?) Is the bed covering required in a special position? 5. Same as question 2 with a partner (exclude any "play" time). 6. Same as question 3 with a partner. 1) I sleep on my side (usually), with my legs sort of apart, arms out. No special arrangement of anything required. 2) approx 5-15 min to fall asleep 3) Sometimes easy sometimes tough to wake up, use an alarm for important times. 4) With a partner, I usually end up having to have my back to them to sleep, in the same, above, position. 5) Takes approx 10-30 min. with a partner to fall asleep (excluding play) 6) Easy to wake up with a partner (the above is for the last two years when I haven't had a regular partner, was more like the first three when I had a live-in girlfriend). --------------- 1) On my side. Arm underpillow, usually with hand dangling limply off the end of the bed. Roughly a fetal position: knees bent, but never to the same degree, or else one kneecap would be on top of the other. Other arm bent so it's roughly equidistant from chin and chest and less than a foot away. No other special requirements. Can't sleep listening to music, because I always listen to the end of the record/tape (took me three weeks to get to sleep once, listening to the radio :-). 2) Hard to say. I'd guess about half-an-hour when I'm reasonably rested. When I'm going to be late or haven't been getting enough sleep, I'd say under five minutes. 3) Not a morning person. I definitely need an alarm, and I usually hit the snooze button two or three times. If I *REALLY* need to wake up, it takes a second alarm that has a horrible and very loud buzz. 4) "spooned." That's when both are facing the same way, so that the curves of both (as they lie on their sides) fit together. The uppermost arm of the person behind is usually hugging the torso of the person in front. Usually turn over at the same time. My arm usually can't go under the pillow in this case (since the other person's head is on it as well) so it sometimes goes straight "down" (that is, if I were standing, the direction would be down. When lying, it's towards the foot of the bed.) between us. Otherwise, my position is much the same as above (I don't know what hers is, either singly or together (except that it's side-semi-fetal as mine is. She occasionally sleeps flat on her back, facing up, but that's only occasional.) We sleep very close, usually the front of one is touching the back of the other, and the thighs are brought "up" so that the tops are touching the backs of the other's thighs. The metaphor of "spooning" is apt. No other gadgetry necessary. 5) She takes drugs which put her to sleep, so usually by the time she gets into bed, she's pretty dopy. Falls asleep within 15 minutes. I take longer than usual, probably 30-45 minutes, even if somewhat tired (she usually goes to sleep earlier than I would wish anyhow, so I'm usually not as tired as when I crawl into bed, alone, at 1:30.) 6) It varies a LOT. Really couldn't guess. Besides, we usually sleep together only on weekends, so neither HAS to get up the next morning. --------------- 1) Sprawled on stomach or back or stretched out on side. Pillow required when on side. 2) There is no normal time. Five minutes to three hours. I like to read before sleeping. 3) Fairly easy to wake up. I use an alarm, but half the time it just tells me to open my eyes and move; I'm already awake. 4) Not much change, I am, to my regret, not much of a cuddler. 5) No change. 6) Basicly no change. However, I might try a morning cuddle if my partner has to get up, too. --------------- 1) I sleep in three positions: a) on stomach with left arm around a pillow and right arm around my stuffed Ewok (present from my SO). Legs straight or right leg bent. b) on left side with both legs bent and a pillow between my knees and holding Ewok with both hands. c) on my back flat holding Ewok to side of chest with left arm. Sometimes I don't sleep with the Ewok. I usually sleep nude except when I am cold. Then I wear my Cuddleskin nightgown (flannel inside, silky outside, made by Barbizon, great present) and sometimes clean socks. 2) I generally fall asleep within five minutes unless I'm really worried about something. Then it may take an hour (doesn't happen much). 3) I don't like to get up in the morning, but if I need to I have no problem. I usually work on my own schedule and get up as late as I please. But I set my alarm to let my know how lazy I'm being. 4) When I sleep with my SO, I don't use the Ewok, but we don't wrap around each other until morning. 5) Five minutes or so. 6) My SO and I like to wrap around each other in the morning. Sometimes we nest like spoons, sometimes one person is one their back with the other on their side with an arm and a leg draped around the flat person. My SO likes to play in the morning and I like to doze, so eventually one of us ends up really waking up. --------------- 1) I sleep often in what has been termed the "stork" position--on my side, one knee drawn up, the other leg extended straight down. I don't often lie on my back or stomach, and for allergy reasons used to prop my head up on two pillows. I often wrap my arms around myself, or sometimes around my Pooh Bear (uh oh! did I give myself away? :-) 2) 5 to 10 minutes, unless I'm very tense. 3) It's easy if I want to go somewhere-- not so easy if I have to get up for something I don't think is important. I use an alarm clock, but don't need it too often. 4) We often sleep in the stereotypical "spoon" position, or at least try to touch-- when we have to face away from each other, we often sleep with our fannies pressed against each other. . . 5) Excluding play, about 5 to 10 minutes. 6) My SO has a terrible time waking and getting up, so I usually get wide awake from having to get HIM awake. --------------- 1) Occasionally on my stomach, usually on one or the other side, never on my back (in the last several years). I will usually be about half-way between on my stomach and on one or the other side, and I will usually have a pillow under the upper leg and one under my chest, in addition to the two under my head. 2) Depends on how long I've been awake, how much I've had to drink, etc., but usually between 15 min. to 1 hr. 3) Depends on lots of things, for a while, I was waking up without an alarm when I first moved into my new apt. (for some obscure reason), but now I have to use one. 4) Depends on the partner. In recent memory, she usually has her back to my chest (both on our sides). Almost always a pillow between my legs. Occasionally, me on my back, her cuddling over me. 5) Same as #2. 6) Same as #3, except that I am less likely to make effort to get up and out of a non-empty bed. --------------- 1) On my back, arms sort of crossed over waist, legs straight out. Sometimes on side, with arms crossed on chest. 2) About 15-20 minutes (unless I'm on an insomnia jag, in which case it's 3 hours. 3) I drag myself up and use an alarm. 4) As for (1); sometimes facing partner; greater tenency to face away from. Constrained by not having as much bed to sprawl on. 5) 10 min. 6) Worse. Am tireder! --------------- 1) flat on my back 2) five minutes 3) very easy, no alarm 4) usually flat on my back; sometimes sleep on side facing partner who does same 5) five minutes 6) very easy, no alarm 1) Normally sleep on my side, legs bent, arms wherever. Radio is a must (not really, but it helps). Usually have a light blanket thrown over me, summer and winter. 2) 1.5 to 2 minutes (seriously!) 3) Not easily at all. I use alarms for what good they'll do, which isn't a whole lot. I normally try to make sure that I don't go to sleep if I have to do something in the next eight hours. 4) Normally facing the same direction, me behind her. Both of us on our sides, and possibility of legs bent or not bent for both. Radio is normally on. Much less likely to have any covering on. 5) Same as #2. 6) Much easier than without someone else there. No, I never use an alarm in this situation. --------------- 1) My normal position is flat on my back with hands on stomach, right on belly-button, left above it, not touching. Bed covering is required over all of this. 2) It seems a bit high. Probably 30 minutes to 45 minutes. If I am not asleep in an hour, I get up for an hour and do something else, then I iterate until I fall asleep or it is time to start a new day. 3) Pretty easily. Yes, I use an alarm, a very loud alarm. 4) I've never slept with a partner. I grew up as an only child and hold onto my privacy jealously. 5) Void. 6) Void. --------------- 1) Flat on back, pillow over eyes. 2) Less than 10 minutes. 3) Cannot get up--sleep 24 hours a day. 4) SO's favorite is spoon (me behind). Sometimes SO flat on stomach, me on stomach with leg and arm over SO. 5) Don't know. Never excluded "play" time (really). 6) Get up easily without alarm (anxious for more "play.") 1) Usually on stomach, legs outstretched toward foot of bed, possibly with one knee bent and one leg straight, forming a sort of triangle. Arms usually wrapped around pillow and head resting on it too. 2) Usually 5-10 minutes at most. 3) Pretty bad about getting up in the morning... best to have a radio alarm with a snooze. I will snooze for an hour then get up. 4) I, same as above; she, on her back, legs like mine, arms tucked behind her under pillow. If it is too warm for me I prefer to stick a foot out of the covers on my side of the bed. I usually face away from her, backed up to her, as much contact as possible between our sides. 5) same 6) She will not tolerate the snoozing, so I usually get up in 15 minutes. --------------- 1) Lying flat on back, arms on chest OR at side (always outside blankets unless very cold), one leg usually bent at hip and knee to make a _figure4_ with other leg. No special requirements (except quiet and no light). No special position for covering. 2) 5-10 minutes. 3) With difficulty. Usually hit snooze button 3 or 4 times until awake enough. Use alarm. 4) Partner rolls around a lot so no real facings or special requirements. 5) 15 minutes. 6) Still with difficulty but usually on first try. Don't hit snooze. --------------- 1) I move around some, but generally sleep on my left side or stomach; when on my side, I tend to curl up (fetal); on my stomach, to spread out (arms & legs pointed in all directions). No special requirements for sleep. 2) 30-60 minutes. 3) I wake up slowly, and use an alarm. I am often late out of my bed, and have been known to wake up, shut off the alarm, return to sleep, and wake up again later with no memory of my first awakening, or of shutting the alarm off. 4) Same answers as in 1), above, when the weather is hot. I have a very wide bed which allows two people to sleep together with no contact. In pleasanter weather I like sleeping "spoon-style" (back-to-front). 5) Answer same as 2) when there's no lovemaking; with sex before sleep, I tend to fall asleep quicker. 6) Same answer, pretty much, though it depends on who I'm sleeping with. If it's someone who wakes up promptly, I'm more likely to do the same; if they're slow to wake, like me, then I don't change. --------------- 1) I normally sleep on may back arms and legs spread out. When no partner present, will sometimes cuddle a stuffed bear, usually in a specific position otherwise used for interpersonal cuddles.... On side, top leg extended out, knee bent, bear under top arm, against chest, bottom arm out straight under pillow. 2) 6 minutes. 3) I sleep 5 hours then wake-up. 4) Ultimately I wind up sleeping as in #1. That is preceeded by one or more of several "cuddle" positions whose goal is maximum body contact. 5) Same time from try to sleep to sleep. Longer due to cuddles pre sleep. 6) Same difference. --------------- 1) I sleep on my stomach with both arms above my head, with usually a little twist to my body. I like to put my arms under a pillow, I don't put my head on a pillow. I like to feel the weight of the covers. 2) About 5-10 minutes, sometimes even quicker. 3) I use an alarm, I often hit the snooze (almost always once, sometimes as many as four times). 4) Generally with a partner we will start out in the classic male on his back female cuddling on his shoulder position but will actually fall asleep in our more normal positions. I am more likely to accept a position on my side and like my partner to lay alongside me with either my front to their back or vica versa. No special requirements. 5) Same as two, I am including the "cooldown time" that results from extended play time as part of the play time. 6) An alarm is needed but I almost never use the snooze, probably because it's play time again! (It's not unusual to awake before the alarm with my partner in my arms) --------------- 1) On my front or on my side. Legs straight or slightly bent. Arms up by my head. 2) 1 to 1 1/2 hours. 3) Fairly easilily, if not alway painlessly. Yes. 4) Not applicable 5) Not applicable 6) Not applicable. --------------- 1) This varies a lot, though is often lying on back with arms stretched over head. Although not REQUIRED, I often turn on a fan (even in winter) to mask out external noise. I usually like to sleep in a relatively cold room, with covering appropriate for the season... anything from a sheet to a heavy blanket, draped LOOSELY over me, up to my neck. 2) This varies a lot too, depending on what I've been doing. It's often as little as 5 minutes, though if I'm thinking about a problem of some sort it may be an hour or more. (This is often the only part of my day when I'm alone enough to concentrate.) 3) Most of the time getting up is no problem, assuming I've had a reasonable amount of sleep. I use an alarm, but it's a quiet "chirp", not an obnoxious buzzer. (I prefer something just loud enough to be mildly annoying, not something I rush out of bed to smash into silence.) 4) This varies a lot, depending on the other person's preferences. I don't really care a lot about my sleep environment, except that I can't sleep well in a hot room. 5) This often will extend to an hour or more. (It's a guaranteed way of getting the other person's undivided attention, and is often one of the few chances I get to talk to her privately.) 6) It's more difficult to get up (minus alarm) when there's a soft, sexy woman next to me! Wait... Maybe I'd better rephrase that to "get out of bed". --------------- 1) All these questions beat the hell out of me. I was asleep at the time. --------------- 1) lying on right or left side, hands under the pillow 2) almost immediatly (usually after midnight before i get there!) 3) terrible in the morning. Use massive battery of alarm clocks, car alarms, and other assorted noisemakers 4) curled up next to them in same (#1) except with arm over them 5) same as #2 6) same as number 3 except girlfriend is more violent that alarm clocks to turn off!!!! --------------- 1) SPREAD EAGLE, FACE DOWN, CENTER OF BED 2) ONE HOUR 3) EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. YES. 4) DOUBLE FETAL... ME FACING HER BACK IN EMBRACE. 5) FEW MINUTES. 6) EASILY... NO. --------------- 1) I change a lot---commonest is on left side, trunk on bed centerline, legs slightly bent at waist and knee, arms in front (pre-fetal?). Also on stomach with head rightwards (which makes my otologist happy--left ear tends to pill up). 2) mostly ~20 minutes (guess) 3) Generally slowly if I have to be up at a specific time---I'm always up too late. ALWAYS need an alarm and often run it through several cycles. 4)-6): it's been long enough since I slept with anyone that I couldn't tell you. --------------- 1) I usually sleep on my side with legs slightly bent. I need a fat pillow to keep my neck straight. I am attempting to sleep on my back to improve my posture. I am not dependent on any coverings except to keep warm. 2) 10-20 minutes. hours if I am bothered or not tired. I turn from side to side a few times, and periodically during the night. 3) I do not get up easily. I like to sleep in and dream away the hours. Alarms annoy me very much. If I need one, I use the radio with low volume which is sufficient. 4) We usually start in a spoon position, my top arm over her, lower arm down my side. But usually, we separate and I sleep as I would alone. 5) A little longer. I am not always as tired as she. 6) A little longer. She usually gets up first. --------------- 1) sleep on side 2) less than half hour. 3) I use an alarm and take a long time to get up. 4) N. A. 5) N. A. 6) N. Are there any special requirements for sleep (tv, radio, holding pillow, stuffed something?) Is the bed covering required in a special position? --------------- 4) With a partner, I usually end up having to have my back to them to sleep, in the same, above, position. She occasionally sleeps flat on her back, facing up, but that's only occasional.) Constrained by not having as much bed to sprawl on. 4) usually flat on my back; sometimes sleep on side facing partner who does same 4) Normally facing the same direction, me behind her. Both of us on our sides, and possibility of legs bent or not bent for both. Radio is normally on. Much less likely to have any covering on. 4) I've never slept with a partner. I grew up as an only child and hold onto 4) SO's favorite is spoon (me behind). Sometimes SO flat on stomach, me on stomach with leg and arm over SO. 4) I, same as above; she, on her back, legs like mine, arms tucked behind her under pillow. If it is too warm for me I prefer to stick a foot out of the covers on my side of the bed. I usually face away from her, backed up to her, as much contact as possible between our sides. 4) Partner rolls around a lot so no real facings or special requirements. 4) Same answers as in 1), above, when the weather is hot. I have a very wide bed which allows two people to sleep together with no contact. In pleasanter weather I like sleeping "spoon-style" (back-to-front). 4) Ultimately I wind up sleeping as in #1. That is preceeded by one or more of several "cuddle" positions whose goal is maximum body contact. 4) Generally with a partner we will start out in the classic male on his back female cuddling on his shoulder position but will actually fall asleep in our more normal positions. I am more likely to accept a position on my side and like my partner to lay alongside me with either my front to their back or vica versa. No special requirements. 4) Not applicable 4) This varies a lot, depending on the other person's preferences. I don't really care a lot about my sleep environment, except that I can't sleep well in a hot room. 4) curled up next to them in same (#1) except with arm over them 4) DOUBLE FETAL... ME FACING HER BACK IN EMBRACE. 4)-6): it's been long enough since I slept with anyone that I couldn't tell you. 4) We usually start in a spoon position, my top arm over her, lower arm down my side. But usually, we separate and I sleep as I would alone. 4) N. A. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Same as question 2 with a partner (exclude any "play" time). --------------- 5) Takes approx 10-30 min. with a partner to fall asleep (excluding play) 5) She takes drugs which put her to sleep, so usually by the time she gets into bed, she's pretty dopy. Falls asleep within 15 minutes. I take longer than usual, probably 30-45 minutes, even if somewhat tired (she usually goes to sleep earlier than I would wish anyhow, so I'm usually not as tired as when I crawl into bed, alone, at 1:30.) 5) No change. 5) Five minutes or so. 5) Excluding play, about 5 to 10 minutes. 5) Same as #2. 5) 10 min. 5) five minutes 5) Same as #2. 5) Void. 5) Don't know. Never excluded "play" time (really). 5) same 5) 15 minutes. 5) Answer same as 2) when there's no lovemaking; with sex before sleep, I tend to fall asleep quicker. 5) Same time from try to sleep to sleep. Longer due to cuddles pre sleep. 5) Same as two, I am including the "cooldown time" that results from extended play time as part of the play time. 5) Not applicable 5) This often will extend to an hour or more. (It's a guaranteed way of getting the other person's undivided attention, and is often one of the few chances I get to talk to her privately.) 5) same as #2 5) FEW MINUTES. 5) A little longer. I am not always as tired as she. 5) N. A. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Same as question 3 with a partner. --------------- 6) Easy to wake up with a partner (the above is for the last two years when I haven't had a regular partner, was more like the first three when I had a live-in girlfriend). 6) It varies a LOT. Really couldn't guess. Besides, we usually sleep together only on weekends, so neither HAS to get up the next morning. 6) Basicly no change. However, I might try a morning cuddle if my partner 6) My SO and I like to wrap around each other in the morning. Sometimes we nest like spoons, sometimes one person is one their back with the other on their side with an arm and a leg draped around the flat person. My SO likes to play in the morning and I like to doze, so eventually one of us ends up really waking up. 6) My SO has a terrible time waking and getting up, so I usually get wide awake from having to get HIM awake. 6) Same as #3, except that I am less likely to make effort to get up and out of a non-empty bed. 6) Worse. Am tireder! 6) very easy, no alarm 6) Much easier than without someone else there. No, I never use an alarm in this situation. 6) Void. 6) Get up easily without alarm (anxious for more "play.") 6) She will not tolerate the snoozing, so I usually get up in 15 minutes. 6) Still with difficulty but usually on first try. Don't hit snooze. 6) Same answer, pretty much, though it depends on who I'm sleeping with. If it's someone who wakes up promptly, I'm more likely to do the same; if they're slow to wake, like me, then I don't change. 6) Same difference. 6) An alarm is needed but I almost never use the snooze, probably because it's play time again! (It's not unusual to awake before the alarm with my partner in my arms) 6) Not applicable. 6) It's more difficult to get up (minus alarm) when there's a soft, sexy woman next to me! Wait... Maybe I'd better rephrase that to "get out of bed". 6) same as number 3 except girlfriend is more violent that alarm clocks to turn off!!!! 6) EASILY... NO. 6) A little longer. She usually gets up first. 6) N. A. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
