The advertisements don't, as has > been claimed, say "You should be young, thin, and attractive.". If they > say anything, they say "Rest you eyes on these attractive people while > they tell you about the product." > Jeff Sonntag No, the advertisments don't *necessarily* say "young, thin, attractive", but they, along with most of the rest of the world often imply that this is how you should look. I think you missed one of the main advertising ploys used by these sort of ads. What they say is "Use our product and you will look like this" (picture beautiful woman holding bottle of one-calorie-TAB). Most of the advertising of this sort is directed at women and sure they don't say this outright, but this is the unconscious message being directed at those watching. The COSMETICS industry and the DIET industry are two of the largest (ab)users of these advertising methods. WHY? Because they work! You ask why? again?? Because most people *do* have insecurities, things that they are sensitive about. As to why all the insecurities about looks and beauty, I won't go into that here (seems to me that others have already covered that). Sure, its easy to say that you shouldn't let what others say or think bother you, but the fact is that you have to interact with others every day of your life, and this is bound to make some sort of impact, be it posative or negative. In the meantime, it should help that more people are becoming more aware, that it is themselves they have to believe in first, because they are the only one that they *have* to live their whole life with! dave hesselberth the Druid of NC decvax!mcnc!ncsu!druid
