EMD DDA40X's, Jack's, behemoths, etc.,) The handwriting is on the wall for the largest diesel locomotives in the world. Current rumor has it that Union Pacific's 24 remaining DDA40X's WILL BE RETIRED from service come December 1984. At least one of the 25 DDA40X's reactivated has already been withdrawn from service, and more are due to follow soon. According to the Western Railfan magazine, CTC BOARD, many of the active DDA's are several hundred thousand miles overdue for overhauls that are not likely to come, especially with new locomotives on order (SD50's for the Missouri Pacific which will in turn free up more power to be shared with the UP.). However, if business levels keep up, one may (emphasize may..) see the DDA's last through the winter into 1985. Long Live the Centennials!!
