Motor Trend receives, as do most of the other major automotive rags,
"production" vehicles from the manufacturers (or their distributors)
for advance testing. "Car of the year" awards are based not on the
public's reaction but the auto journalists', hence the possibility
of annointing the winner in advance of public release.

Note: Nominally the vehicles tested are supposed to be production 
configuration and not custom versions--whether you believe that or 
not depends on your cynacism level. :-)
