I've just had it pointed out to me that the Vax gives negative numbers
for ``i % j'' where i is negative and j is positive, whereas the posted
mod gives positive numbers.  I had thought it gave back positive numbers
(who knows why).  Don't install that change (unless your machine *does*
produce +5 for -3 % 8...).
