The name comes from the fundamentalist rabble-rouser preacher who provoked his parishioners into rioting and smashing the new card-driven automatic looms which Hollerith had developed. Happened in England at the start of the industrial revolution. Look it up in a good history book. Incidentally, the Luddites were soundly chastised by the Church of England. Had to mention that just in case someone gets the notion that religion is anti-science. Hutch
