The other night I hit two Burger Kings looking for them. They had both dropped it. I couldn't understand why. They are the only reason I go to Burger King at all! It was their most popular specialty sandwich! I have heard that the reason they dropped it is that some assholes had started a protest about 'Burger King killing baby cows'. Is this true?? Does anyone know??? Has the American Fast Food Industry (one of the 7 wonders of the modern world) become a hostage to the Vegetarian Defense League???? Seriously, this is becoming INSANE! Here in Massachusetts, the average sentance for pet abuse is worse than the average sentence for child abuse. Maybe I'm just displaying my Vermont naivete, but where have our priorities gone? This is hardly isolated, either. Recently, the Vermont deer herd has been overpopulating (no predators, not enough hunters), so they opened a limited doe season. You should have heard the uproar! Somehow, killing male deer is OK and time honored, but killing a FEMALE deer? Oh, how terrible!! Or how about the Canadian seals that Greenpeace is always complaining about. The seal herds have been steadily increasing in population over the last years, so they are hardly being endangered or over hunted. But somehow, the idea of killing BABY seals is much more unpalatable (not to mention sensational) than adult seals. Unfortunately, no-one wants the adult seal pelts. Should we just let them overpopulate and starve? With their natural predators gone, that is the only other option. Some people say it is the METHOD they complain about. Clubbing to death is much CRUELER than using a gun. That's one of the worst misconceptions I have heard! Go tell that to a deer that has been shot and not finished off, and takes days to finally die. Despite the extensive media coverage of some of the rare cases of blunders, clubbing is one of the most humane ways of killing an animal. Again, here in Massachusetts, there is a growing lobby of 'animal lovers' who are trying to prevent any use, in ANY circumstances, of animals for scientific research. I heard a talk from one of their leaders once. When he was confronted with the fact that much of this research is done with animals who were slated for death by the SPCA, he replied that the SPCA killing unwanted animals was a travesty, and that animals are due the same rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that people have. It seems that he was in favor of a national welfare state for animals. Now look, I like animals too. I think they are a cute as anyone else. I feel very strongly about environmental issues. But this is getting absurd! And why is it that the strongest advocates of 'animal rights' seem to be from cities, with a rather romanticized view of 'nature'? I'm sorry, but I have trouble dealing with people who got their ideas about natural checks and balances from Grizzly Adams. Alien
