It has a spring loaded bar that comes down over the childs head and straps for their shoulders that are attached to the bar. I would suggest either getting one with a corduroy cover unless you are handy with designing covers (or you could buy one, I suppose), since the dark brown vinyl gets very hot. Our favorite feature is that Samantha (our 16 mo. daughter, pride and joy, etc :-) ) can help fasten herself in, usually. All that she has to do is pull the bar down in front of herself and leave the actual latching to us. The latch is a very heavy duty small seatbelt latch. Hope this helps.
