It appears to be a typical split-screen duplicating effect, probably shot in front of a blue screen onto which the backround elements were added in optical post-processing. This technique would have been used when it was necessary to show both figures' faces simultaneously. For close-ups and other similar shots, such effects are not necessary since a "double" can be used for shots that include both persons but where only one face can be seen. --Lauren--
