A possible explanation is that 20-30 years ago, we didn't have the mobility that we have today. For example, I got to ride in the family car once a week if I was lucky. As a result of this low mobility, people tended to stay around the neighborhood and so would tend to get together and socialize. I know in my case, even though I know who most of my immediate neighbors are, I very rarely socialize with them. In some cases I haven't even met them and I have been living there for four years! If I want to see someone and socialize, I just hop into my car and blaze off to wherever I want. Len
