The single main reason that there are so many versions of UNIX being maintained (DEC, IBM, AT&T, etc.) is that there are SO MANY VERSIONS OF UNIX. This is due to its popularity. VMS, on the other hand, comes in one version from a single source for a quite limited family of computers. No wonder it can be maintained by a single agency. You could say the same things about Apple ProDOS; does that mean that it is preferable to UNIX? No way! (I use both.) This seems to be another of the many bogus VMS-vs-UNIX comparisons.
