"Pure" components ala Sony or Proton is *very* expensive, with Proton being the
cheaper.  I think a better route is to look into the high definition
monitor/TV's which several firms now make.  With a "monitor/TV" you get a
high resolution (>= 400 lines) monitor together with a tuner section and
semi-respectable speakers.  In my research I have found the Hitachi series to
have the best picture, specs and features per dollar with Toshiba running a
close second.  Both of these makes have a 21" rectangular and nearly flat
screen version (both based on the picture tube which Toshiba makes) which is
gorgeous to view.  They feature things like direct RGB inputs, IR remote, VCR
inputs and outputs, on-screen indication of time & channel and 139 channel
tuning.
