My preamp has a relay that shorts the outputs within a few tens of
milliseconds after turning the power switch off.  It unshorts them
about 3 seconds after turning it on.

My power amp has a relay that disconnects the speakers within a
few tens of milliseconds after turning the power switch off.
It reconnects them after power-on only when all significant DC
has vanished from the amplifier outputs and about eight seconds
have elapsed, whichever is longer.

I do not have any problems with speaker thumps.
