The problem seems to stem from "jump-starting" another automobile.

During the procedure, the clock receives a surge which ruins it
for life.   The older the time piece, the higher the probability
that the clock can't take the excitement.  Only the higher quality
auto clocks are able to handle the surge; and live to time it.
