I recently stumbled on a terrific reference on automotive lubricants
and fuels.  It is Mobil's "Automotive Products Manual".  It is intended 
for use by Mobil marketers to promote Mobil products.  Nonetheless, it gives
excellent, understandable explanations of topics such as gasoline additives,
engine oil viscosity indexes, etc.

This manual, currently in the 30th edition, is available for free from:
