I have a 1979 gas fuel injection rabbit, and it looses oil at an amazing rate. The faulty valve gasket was replaced, but it still leaked oil at the same rate. My question is, if it's burning oil, why is it leaving it on the ground? I'm pretty sure oil is leaking from the disconnected air valve that was supposed to go between the engine and the air filter (it was disconnected so the oil wouldn't ruin the air filter). My friendly neigborhood auto mechanic said it's burning oil, even though no blue smoke is emitted from the exhaust, but why when the car is parked does it drop its oil in various places on the ground? Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm a little frustrated at putting a quart of oil in every 50 or 60 miles, and I'm not going to drop >$1000 on an engine rebuild. While I'm on the subject, does anyone know of a reputable and inexpensive (in that order) garage that will work on VW's, particularly those with problems like mine (I live in Cambridge, MA) Frustratingly yours, -Joshua D.
