"Timing set to specs" is the problem.  You simply have too much
spark advance for YOUR engine's compression ratio and YOUR gaso-
line.  

The ultimate cure might involve checking the centrifugal and vac-
uum advance curves of your distributor, but the simplest, easiest,
and most effective thing to do is retard the static timing.

Mixture leaness usually shows itself with hesitation on throttle
opening.
