I'm looking for a package of database utilities which could be called
from C running under PC-DOS.  The utilities should allow the program to
query the database and then process the information which is returned.

I'm concerned about speed in this application, so I'd prefer to have to
program access the database directly (via subroutines) rather than use
a conventional database program and BAT files.

Does something like this exist?  Has anyone ever used it?  Any help,
information, or comments would be appreciated.  Thanks.
