I consider it unfortunate that everything of that sort is viewed as
a step towards marriage. Living together might well be (I believe it is)
way to find out whether marriage would work, but it is invariably
interpreted as A Step To.. rather then as a stable arrangement.

That kind of social pressure is probably harmful for both current living
arrangement and prospective marriage (and I am not against it!).
My impression is that it can be viewed as an unescapable trap and thus
resented by both sides. Well, in extreme cases.

Incidentally, the pressure to get married can get internalized and
start speaking as a voice of conscience - oh, ridiculous world.
