I consider it unfortunate that everything of that sort is viewed as a step towards marriage. Living together might well be (I believe it is) way to find out whether marriage would work, but it is invariably interpreted as A Step To.. rather then as a stable arrangement. That kind of social pressure is probably harmful for both current living arrangement and prospective marriage (and I am not against it!). My impression is that it can be viewed as an unescapable trap and thus resented by both sides. Well, in extreme cases.
