I have a couple friends who tried it, living together for 2 years in one case, and 3 years in the other. Both marriages broke up rather acrimoniously. (In one case, He walked in on Her and His best friend.) I prefer living with my SO (which is what I'm doing now) to marrying. Even now after dating for almost 3 years, I'm not sure that this is the person I want to spend the rest of my life with. I'm not Catholic, but I feel like marriage vows are sacred. They aren't something to be taken lightly. Living together is a good way to get to know someone really well. I think the difference is the COMMITTMENT involved. Anytime I like, I can tell my SO to get the hell out of my life (not that I'm likely to do that :-)). I couldn't do that if we were married. Jest ramblin' Red (ukma!red)
