Well, the following may help... ;-} Buy a Radio Shack #63-888 Micronta Electronic Programmable Timer. It has a digital clock with on/off presets, and uses a hefty relay (you know, MECHANICAL contacts?) to switch the load (up to 1875 watts). Besides the automatic on/off, there is a manual on/off pushbutton. It comes with a schematic, and you can easily (:-) wire the manual pushbutton (with appropriate resistor and diode protection) to the data terminal ready (DTR) output of one of your TTY ports. Use the TIOCSDTR/TIOCCDTR ioctls to toggle DTR. (Some kernels have been locally extended to let you read Carrier Detect (CD), which if wired to the relay coil would confirm whether you had just turned the Mr. Coffee on, or maybe off). If desired, you can cut the timer out entirely, and connect DTR to the relay drive transistor Q4 for positive control. Make sure the polarity is such that if the VAX crash/reboots when you are not around, the Mr. Coffee ends up OFF, rather than ON. ;-} Combined with a music-playing program (see previous article on the uses of DTR wired to a speaker), you can really "wake up and smell the coffee". ;-} Rob ("Is it April 1st yet?")
