only the RX02's can format a disk (or do double density).  If I remember
correctly, I never had any trouble with diskettes on the RX01's as
long and I inited them and ran BAD on them (BAD will scrag the
whole disk, thus writting every sector).  They are soft sectored and
aren't very smart (the RX01's that is).
