One way to increse the sustain is for guitarists to use feedback from an amplifier(acoustic) to increase the sustain. Another is the use of loopback equipment (such as delays and tape echos to 'sample/hold' the note. but if the string is played in vacuum, then the friction of the air is removed, and the sutain is much longer.
