In case anybody is interested, here is what I learned. There are two types of machines that record the time of the call with each call: (1) A voice synthesizer announces the time (and date) when a call is received and that announcement is also recorded on the tape of incoming calls. (2) The machine encodes the time (and date) on the call on the tape. That info is presented on an LCD display when you play back the tape. Toshiba makes a "type (1)" machines. I was told that this machine is to be avoided ("it doesn't work"). I didn't investigate further since I prefer the "type (2)" scheme. Sanyo makes a "type (2)" machine. Model 4000 has remote and costs $159, model 2000 doesn't have remote and costs $115. I have been using the 2000 for a couple of weeks and am very happy with its performance. Yuval
