Something we found very useful for our daughter when she doesn't want
to go to bed (all alone, not sleepy, nothing to do--a horrible prospect)
was to put a portable radio into her room and tune it to some quiet kind
of music that she likes (in this case, jazz and classical).  This worked 
when she was very young (1-1/2) and woke up in the night, also.
