It's hard to categorize "Ultra-orthodox" Jews, as there are so many different groups which consider themselves in that category. The view I've heard most often, from observant but not fanatical orthodox Jews, is that the creation story is a fable which served to give legitimacy to the real meat of the Old Testament, the laws.
