His was the first big sanctuary case to come to trial. He faced 15 years jail under indictment by the Reagan administration Justice Department for the heinous crime of driving a Central American refugee to a bus station! The trial took place in Corpus Cristi, Texas. It appears as though the government has overlooked a key factor in its attempt to smash the Church-based sanctuary movement. It will be extremely difficult to convince the ordinary decent Americans on a jury that helping out Central American refugees is anything remotely resembling a crime. Numerous other sanctuary cases, including another indictment of Elder will be coming to trial soon. -Andy Berman ----------------------------------------------- -- -------------------------------------------------- "My life is so complicated, it's a good thing I'm such a simple person that I can understand it" -Ed Balchowski
