Purdue's Cary Quad dorm is the (un)official sponser, and the race is held on the oval sidewalk inside the Quad. It is supposed to be held on the coldest night of the year, and on a weeknight to boot. It starts at midnight with a group of runners carrying torches while some of the band members play the Olympic theme song. It lasts until the last runner quits and takes a solo 'victory' lap. My freshman year, a friend of mine ran for ~20 miles in almost three hours to finish in second place. I think he was crazy. About 350 men run and there is usually only 1 female runner; about 2 or 3 thousand spectators line the oval(1/5mile) standing 5 deep on both sides of the track. Usually the vast majority of the runners give it up after a half hour or so... it's usually about 10 degrees or so, and when the spectators leave, the winds gets to the runners.
