View, CA Lines: 23 Ames Ski Club Trip, South Tahoe Region: (Gene Levin, RIACS leader) Weather, Stormy two days out of three, clear and blue on middle day. Day time temps: range 2F at top of Heavenly Valley, 11F bottom, 20 F in South Tahoe near Meyers. Highs (sunny day) 40. Windy on summits, wind chill as low as -40F (burr!) Snow conditions: 1 foot new snow over a hard 3 foot base. Exposed obstacles. Much snow on the first week was skied off, this second set of storms is finally beginning to stick, just a bit more needed. Member of parties skied at Heavenly Valley, Kirkwood, Sierra Ski Ranch (seems nice, might try this one), Echo Summit. X-C skiing in hills N of Heavenly Nevada side, Kirkwood, Echo Lakes region. Blue stick wax. Gambling warning: party lost a total $50 one nite (e.g. I came out ahead $16 after giving Levin $100 in complimentary chips, but that doesn't count). Road conditions: chains needed for first storm Placerville to Meyers (60 miles). No chains needed upon leaving (thank God!). Other road conditions: Carson Spur closed briefly on the sunny day several of us went to Kirkwood to ski with Peter and Dorothy Denning. No one coming up from the Valley. --eugene miya NASA Ames Research Center {hplabs,ihnp4,dual,hao,vortex}!ames!aurora!eugene emiya@ames-vmsb.ARPA
