If I remember _Pilgrim's Progress_ rightly, Bunyan has Moses ("the law") beat Christian up, and then Jesus comes along and tells Moses to lay off; "the law" is no longer to be used to damn all sinners. A modern charismatic would say that God always loves you and is pleased with you, even when your sins displease him. This may be only a semantic distinction.
