The term "meshummad" means a deserter who has forsaken his people.
The term has a much more unfavorable connotation than that of a
convert.  I found this quote from the Besht ( Rabbi Israel Baal
Shem Tov, founder of Hasidism ):
	"Every Jew is an organ of the Shekhinah ( the divine
presence ).  As long as the organ is joined to the body, however
tenuously, there is hope; once it is cut off, all hope is lost."
