Its been a couple of years since I've been dancing in Boston, but this is what I remember: - SPIT, Landsdown St., always dark, often crowded new wave dance spot. One of the Boston classics. Usually ~$5 unless name groups are playing. Often just discs. Oedipus, from WBCN (a great radio station) may still DJ here occassionally. - The Metro, Landsdown St., used to be the disco "Boston, Boston". Right next to SPIT. Much more disco-pop than SPIT, but good groups often perform. - There are a couple other places on and around Landsdown St. and Kenmore Square. 9 Landsdown St - never been, but struck me as being for the younger set. A roller rink is there. The disco "Narcissus" and the sister rock-dance place Celebration are in nearby Kenmore square. I didn't like these places too much. Probably overrun by BU and Northeastern students, if that's what you're looking for. The Rat - Kenmore Sq. - used to be for punk, hard rock and fringe music. Don't know if its the same now. - The Channel, Necco St., good place to see some of the great Boston local talent as well as name groups (I saw the Thompson Twins there in the early days, fantastic!). Reasonable dance floor and new wave dance music. They apparently have a branch location on the Cape (Cod) near Hyannis, but I've never been there. - Faces, Route 2 off Fresh Pond., A standard large disco. - The Flying Machine, Holiday Inn near Gov't Ctr, A standard hotel disco. - Jonathan Swifts, Harvard Square, Live performance by a mix of groups, some quite good. There are many places in this class - I don't remember all of them: Uncle Sam's, Mister McNasty's (I remember it being hard-core punk/slam dancing), Inman Sq. Men's Bar, Cantone's (also hard-core). A word (or two) about local talent. Boston has a lot. The groups I would watch for and recommend are: The New Models (new wave), November Group, Jon Butcher Axis, Robin Lane, The Make, City Limits, and others I've forgotten. There is also a very reasonable jazz scene in Boston. Enough for now. Sorry about any omissions and inaccuracies. I probably had the best times at Spit and the Channel. Maybe later I'll post an article about the New York scene as I know it. In D.C., try the 9:30 Club. In Minnesota, try First Avenue (isn't it the club in Purple Rain ?). In L.A., try Madame Wong's 2 (in Westwood? which I thought was better than 1). But then the L.A. scene is quite large, too. Cheers, Dan Ts'o Dept.
