Shortly after the landing party beams down, Kirk looks off in the dis- tance and says, "My brother's lab is over there." Following this line is a 2-second shot of UCLA's Schoenberg Hall (our music building). Since none of the rest of the scene was filmed at UCLA, I assume they took this one shot separately (since there was no motion, it might even have been a single still picture duplicated as necessary to fill in the desired amount of time). There is no reason to suppose that any of the cast came to UCLA during the filming of this episode. Incidentally, this shot of Schoenberg Hall is backwards. What you are seeing is the NW corner of the Schoenberg lobby; the camera was facing slightly south of due east, from the far corner of a raised patio area outside the building. For some reason -- perhaps just by accident -- left and right were reversed in the final print. True Star Trek fanatics may wish to come to UCLA and see if they can discover for themselves the exact camera angle used for this scene. If you try this, keep in mind that the trees around Schoenberg have grown quite a bit since the late 60's; in particular, there is a large tree limb in the line of view now that evidently wasn't there 17 years ago. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------+ | RICH WALES | | University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) | | Computer Science Department | | 3531 Boelter Hall // Los Angeles, California 90024 // USA | | Phone: (213) 825-5683 // +1 213 8255683 | | ARPANET: wales@UCLA-LOCUS.ARPA | | UUCP: {cepu,ihnp4,trwspp,ucbvax}!ucla-cs!wales | +-------------------------------------------------------------+
