Of all the cities I was in, Madrid was least worthwhile. Barcelona is a whole lot nicer. And San Diego is a whole lot nicer than either of those, which is why I went there during the semester break instead. If you want to go to Europe, and are not particularly hung up about Spain, I would recommend Lugano,Switzerland and Monte Carlo, Monaco, both of which I found to be worth the trip.
