We ran into Mike Karels & Kirk McKusick; here is the definitive answer
to "why weren't they there" [at the "4.2 BOF"]?:

They *had not* signed up for any such BOF.  They did find out about it
before it was scheduled to happen, but (a) would YOU go someplace just
'cause someone else signed you up for it? and (b) remember, they were
just in from a timezone two hours away in the wrong direction for
staying awake late....
