The pinnacle of this technique is currently reached by AMC with the 2.2 liter jeep four cylinder (in new Cherokees and Wagoneers). This system has a sensor for each of the four cylinders, and will retard the timing only for the cylinder which is knocking. This enables all cylinders to run at optimum ignition timing.
