Using DES on a modem sounds like the slowest mode you could ever want. I don't know if you couldn't do it in software but if you want to do it in hardware there are at least two companies that make them, AMD and Western Digital. Note that DES is usually done on 64 bits or 8 bytes at a time. AMD's chip allows you to do 8 bits at a time, with a corresponding loss in throughput, which you presumably don't care about or you would use the 64 bits at a time mode. Our marketing blurbs talk about how we're pushing the chips but I am not at liberty to reveal what kind of pricing is available. You should talk to your salesman. He might even get you a sample. Or I might if you're really desperate. Unfortunately I don't know much about WD's except that they advertise one.
