It is not illegal to own ammo for it. It is not illegal to own a semi-auto rifle. It is highly controled. As I see it, the problem is not that people want to control handguns, they want to ban them ( Remember, it's the National Coalition to Ban Handguns - NOT The National Coalition to Rigorously Control Handguns). I would not mind laws that made it difficult to purchase a handgun if that meant that law abiding people that want a handgun could get one.
