In California, at least, for a couple's common law marriage to be
legal, they must live together for a specified period AS MAN AND WIFE.

If you tell everyone "We're NOT married" whenever the question comes up, you
ought to be OK (no pun intended).

My wife and I lived together for three years before getting married, and we
checked it out.
