I didn't think common law marriages were legal anymore (except maybe
in Louisiana or Mississippi . . .  :) . . .).  I remember being involved 
several years ago in a discussion on legal issues affecting women and 
being told that the rights and benefits women gain from marriage do not 
accrue to "common law wives."
