If you don't mind having more clutter on the table,
the thing that we have taken to using is plastic covered
graph paper (K&E brand) glued to large cardboard.

Grease pencil shows up easily, erases very well, and
is easy to get dimensions right on.  Besides, it's 
cheap, and when worn out, easily replaced.  (A 2X3 foot
board costs ~$5.00)
