    A good way to find out if the scroll you see is a scare monster or
not is NOT to read it or even pick it up right away.  Here is a
helpful tip i learned when I started playing:                  

 1) spot scroll
 2) look for a monster (or if one in room, get him to follow you)
 3) move right next to scroll

    .@H
    .?.
    ...

 4) move on the diagonal, if the monster moves on top of the scroll,
then it is NOT a scare monster scroll, and can be picked up..

    .H.
    @?.
    ...     SCARE MONSTER!!!!   

    ...
    @H.
    ...      NOT a scare monster


  5) if it is a scare monster, after you pick it up (remember, do not]
read it!!), do a 'c'all and call it SCARE MONSTER!!
